We've had this EP on our eyes for a while, honestly. Years as of writing this, yet we only really managed to have the confidence to ask as of late. Hidden within the expanses of the deceptively short runtime of this piece is a collection of synth-driven jungle and dnb pieces, crafted with care and relentlessly driving in their composition. There's something going on at every corner, whether it's a buildup or a payoff as the breaks kick in.
Tracks like 'MODES' and 'ANGELS' take the energy down just a notch but deliver with complex structuring of their percussion, placing specially-made chopped sections of breaks to help aid in bridging from one idea to another, before carrying on back to sections that almost seem to have a chorus status, adding familiarity to click in with its more ambitious approaches.
With an addition of four remixes as well, we've gotten some varied takes on what constitutes a fresh experience of HALOS from four artists we put our full trust into, as well as appreciation for what they have made.
VCRSLOT's conceptualization of 'DREAMS' adds more dreaminess and a freely-flowing beat structure to the previously aggressive, overtly-energized track. Those familiar with our previous release of this artist's work won't find themselves surprised with this idea's implementation, yet they are sure to enjoy themselves with the myriad of additional instruments giving a new flavor of spice to the synth base.
Clean Slate's idea foremost when going towards 'HALOS' was to amp the idea of Drum & Bass to it's overwhelmingly imposing roots, as suggested both with the vocal samples flitting in through the background and its clear infatuation with the Street Fighter series and it's very prominent appreciation of the style. Heavy-hitting drum sections give punch to the tweaked synths, punchier bass leaving an undeniable presence to the backing beat.
JamKam, in turn, decides to rework from the base and build something similar but fresh, using an array of varied percussions to add a level of variety to the beat which pushes 'ANGELS' forward, using the original's sampling of loon calls to a more prominent level in the midpoint. Enough elements of the original are present and flourishing to make it feel like a fresh spin on the track, while leaving notes of its original form to compliment what is new.
Finally, super going takes 'HALOS' into their hands for something wholly experimental, chopping and rearranging the work into a glitchy, freeform sprawl across all of its pieces. The original ideas feel scattered in space at a frozen point in time, played back in abstract form with a level of deliberation that demands awe.
